Recommendations

I recommend , if someone were to conduct a survey along the lines of mine, changing the idioms that were asked about. The idioms i chose were good but there weren't very many of them and I would like to know if there are other idioms that people know of and use. I would also like to know what peoples favorite idioms are. I found out that "close but no cigar" and "cat got your tongue?" were some favorite but most people said that they either didn't have a favorite or didn't know which to choose.

Conclusions

My data told me that most people know what it mean to be down in the dumps but the other idioms I chose were not as well known. Only one person out of 18 knew what "in the pink" means. No one knew what the definition of "painting the town red" was and three out of 18 could define "sea legs". I also found out that more people than not do not have a favorite idiom and do not use them often.

Secondary Research

The definitions of my idioms:

  • Down in the dumps- unhappy; depressed
  • In the pink-in perfect condition, especially of health
  • Paint the town red-engage in a riotous spree
  • Sea legs-the ability to walk steadily on the deck of a boat or ship

My Research Plan

I will answer my research question by asking people what they think the idioms I chose mean. The people that I will ask are the students of my school and my family. Then I will go to the internet and search for the meaning on Google or another information site. I hope to find an article on at least 2 of the idioms I chose.

Research Question

What do the following idioms mean and where did they come from?

-"Down in the dumps"
-"Sea legs"
-"In the pink"
-"Paint the town red"

My Research Goals

I want to know more about idioms and where they come from. There are so many and I just would like to know some of peoples favorite idioms and one that are special to them and special to me.

My Language Beliefs

I believe that language is more than just rules and words. I think it's so much more than that because everyone is different and they make their language their own. So language is who you are, the way your feel, and where your come from. I learned this by listening to all the different guest speakers we had in our Lit/Comp class. They all came from different places, different people, and different lives.
